Chettinad is famous for its palatial 18th century mansions. Chettinad architecture stands out for its use of large common spaces, extensive use of woodworks, handcrafted tiles, belgian glassworks and wooden pillars. They were built using materials imported from east Asian countries and Europe about 100 years ago.
Eventhough known as Chettiars, they prefer to call themselves the Nagarathar. The central theme of Chettinad culture is worship and every village has atleast one temple. Most of the village activities are centered around the temple.
Athangudi, a village situated on the outskirts of Chettinad is a place famous for its hand made tiles. There are hundreds small scale tile units in this village, where the entire tile making process is still carried out by human hands.
Chettinad is famous for it's Cotton sarees and textiles and that are a couple of minutes walk away from The Chettinad Heritage. These most vibrant Indian textiles are woven in small handloom home units spread across Chettinad.
